Description
Course offerings in English Language Development (ELD) are intended for students who do not speak English as a first or native language. Entrance into the program is by test and teacher recommendation. Students are originally placed in level 1 or 2 according to their English ability and move from level to level and into non-ELD classes as soon as their English skills will allow such movement. Students normally advance to a new level at the start of each school year, but occasionally a student may remain in a level for more than one year or move to new level during the year. Most students go into regular classes directly after level 2.
Level 1 students are enrolled in English SL 1-2, a two-hour course. Level 2 students take English SL 3-4, a two-hour course. Reading 1-2 SL is open to students in both level 1 and level 2. U.S. History 1-2 SL is open to students who are juniors or seniors. English SL 1-2 and English SL 3-4 both meet the 8 semester English graduation requirement. Modern World History SL is open to Level II students only. NOTE: Present and former ELD students should consult with either the ELD Department Head or the College Advisor to determine if they should take the TOEFL exam and/or participate in the PSAT/SAT program.
