SILVER SWORD POINTS USE THEM OR LOSE THEM!
What is Silver Sword?
The Silver Sword Award is for volunteer service to the school and the community. Points are awarded for those activities, which do not ordinarily receive credits or grades, and for activities, which require time and dedication far beyond the usual course work.
Who can participate?
All Aragon students are eligible to participate in Silver Sword. It is the responsibility of the individual student to earn and register their points during their high school career. Students are expected to be aware of deadlines (check daily announcements) and monitor their points, periodically, for any discrepancies.
What do I get?
The Silver Sword is awarded in the senior year at graduation. Those seniors who have earned 500 points or more will be recognized and given a “Sliver Sword” pin. At graduation, recipients will be listed in the graduation program as Silver Sword members and will have the distinction of wearing a silver tassel on their cap instead of the traditional red and black tassel.
How many points do I need?
You need 500 Silver Sword points to earn a Silver Sword. However, no more than 200 points can be earned through Community Service. The remaining 300 points must be school related activities as listed on the Silver Sword Point Roster.
How do I turn in my points?
You need to pick up a Silver Sword Point Application in the Counseling Office. The applications are on the Silver Sword table located next to The Silver Sword Coordinator’s desk. An application form must be filled out completely for each activity. You must have the activity advisor sign the form before you turn it in. Completed forms need to be dropped into the Silver Sword box located on the table.
What if my advisor is not an “on campus” faculty member or no longer works at Aragon?
In the case of “off campus” coaches, the Athletic Director (Coach Sell) can sign the form. Check with The Silver Sword Coordinator in the Counseling office if you are unsuccessful in locating the advisor for your activity.
How do I know how many points an activity is worth?
A Silver Sword points roster is on the backside of the Silver Sword form and it is posted at the Silver Sword table in the counseling office.
When are the points due?
You have at least 30 days after each semester to turn in points earned during that semester. The deadline is written on the form. Because forms are available all year, there are no late exceptions. Points earned prior to the semester specified will also not be excepted.
How do I register Community Service points?
If you volunteer outside of school, during the school year or during the summer, you can earn Community Service points by submitting written verification from your supervisor. Written verification needs to be on letterhead or stationery from the organization stating how many hours and what kind of work was performed. Community Service means “volunteering” or “without pay.” If you are getting paid for your services (i.e.: tutoring), you cannot earn points.
No more than 200 community service points can be credited towards a Silver Sword.
1 Hour of Community Service = 1 Silver Sword Point
Please note: When submitting community service hours, the information is used for the exclusive purpose of earning a silver sword. We do not communicate this information to the colleges or keep track of the hours for you
Can I still turn in points after the deadline?
Sorry, No! Our Silver Sword Commissioners work hard to keep accurate records on all participating students. 30 days should be enough time for serious Silver Sword participants to turn in their points. This is Silver Sword policy.
How do I know how many Silver Sword points I’ve earned?
Silver Sword points can be checked with Silver Sword Commissioners or with The Silver Sword Coordinator. If you have any questions, please leave a note for the Silver Sword Commissioners or ask The Silver Sword Coordinator.
Who determines how many points an activity is worth?
The Silver Sword commissioners together with the Silver Sword Coordinator and the activity’s advisor review the service activities and time commitment.
Why bother?
The Silver Sword is one of the few remaining traditions left at Aragon. It was started when the school first opened in the 1960s. It has endured over the years as a symbol of our students’ dedication to the ideals of giving, unselfishly, for the good of the community both on and off campus. It remains today, as one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon a graduate.
